North Carolina Elopement | Ultimate Planning Guide [2025]

North Carolina Elopement | Planning Guide, Locations & More!

There’s something absolutely magical about eloping in North Carolina. We both grew up on the east coast and have spent decades exploring the Blue Ridge Mountains… and have explored the mountain west and more of the US too. With all that travel experience, we still come back to the mountains of NC as our favorite place to create elopements for couples.

Hiking to an epic mountain view that goes on forever; hiding away in a secret forest and dancing together in privacy; saying your vows in front of a waterfall where no one else can hear — these are the kinds of experiences that a North Carolina Elopement can offer.

Don’t forget too the small mountain towns and Southern hospitality that permeates every aspect of the culture, and you have a recipe for an elopement that feels welcoming and just like home. It’s a place that invites you to slow down, breathe, and focus on what matters most—each other. Whether you’re dreaming of a quiet ceremony with just the two of you or an intimate celebration with loved ones, North Carolina has a little bit of everything.

We’re Here to Help You Plan the Perfect Day

Planning an elopement might seem simpler than a traditional wedding, but if you want a truly unique experience there are still countless details to consider. From choosing the right location to crafting a timeline, every decision plays a part in creating a personalized day. Top 10 Places to Elope in North Carolina

From iconic mountain spots in the wild to elopement friendly venues and everything in between, here’s a top ten list of unforgettable North Carolina elopement locations:

1. Grandfather Mountain

  • Guests: Perfect for up to 20 guests at park overlooks.
  • Privacy: The magic happens on weekdays or at sunset when the crowds fade, and it feels like the mountain is just yours. Definitely avoid weekends and holidays!
  • Cost/Permits: Cost varies and also take into account park admission fees.
  • Parking: Parking can get tricky during busy seasons; carpooling makes things easier.
  • Best Times: Spring or fall when the views are clear and vibrant; sunset is typically the best golden hour (most of the views face west).
  • Best Fit: For couples who want a touch of adventure without a hike, and who love epic views and the grandeur of the mountains.

Our Take: Grandfather Mountain has a kind of bold, dramatic energy that’s hard to describe but unforgettable once you’re there. If you’re a couple that loves sweeping views and just a little bit of adventure, this place is made for you. It’s one of those spots where you can take it all in, and feel how big the world is just a few steps from parking. It’s super popular so to truly feel the magic, plan for a weekday or right before the park closes—you’ll dodge the crowds and have more of that mountain magic to yourselves.

2. Roan Mountain

  • Guests: Practically speaking, works well for up to 15 people in the meadows or along the trails.
  • Privacy: If you’re willing to hike further than most everyone else, you’ll find some incredibly peaceful, secluded spots.
  • Cost/Permits: No permits required for small gatherings.
  • Parking: Trailhead parking is very limited, especially during peak seasons—carpooling, arriving for sunrise, or during the week are best.
  • Best Times: June for blooming rhododendrons, fall for vibrant colors, and winter for snow-covered landscapes. Usually the road is “clear” during winter but have backup plans, this is high elevation!
  • Best Fit: Couples looking for 360deg views, big open spaces, mountain meadows and willing to hike to solitude.

Our Take: Roan Mountain feels like stepping into another world above everything else. With its wide-open meadows and 360-degree views, it’s perfect for couples who want a peaceful, yet epic vibe. It’s best if you’re okay with a hike beyond the first mile to find those secluded spots that feel like they’re just yours. Bonus points if you come during rhododendron season—the blooms make it even more breathtaking. This is for couples who want their day to feel quiet, intentional, and deeply connected to nature, and don’t mind “working” a little bit harder than everyone else to find their own spot on the mountain.

3. Pretty Place (Symmes Chapel)

  • Guests: Accommodates up to 200 people, but smaller gatherings feel very intimate in the chapel.
  • Privacy: Your reserved time slot guarantees a private ceremony which is a great aspect
  • Cost/Permits: Rental fees range around $3,500, depending on the season.
  • Parking: Ample onsite parking for large groups.
  • Best Times: Sunrise is unbeatable for its peacefulness and light.
  • Best Fit: Couples looking for a faith-centered ceremony with breathtaking mountain views.

Our Take: Pretty Place Chapel lives up to its name—it’s simply stunning. While techinically in South Carolina, we include it here because it is right next to the border with North Carolina. There’s something so powerful about standing there, surrounded by family, with the mountains stretching out in front of you, acknowledging our Creator God who made this beautiful earth we get to explore. It’s perfect for couples who want a day that feels grounded in faith and love. If you’re dreaming of a ceremony that’s equal parts meaningful and awe-inspiring, this is it.

Just a few things to know: you’ll be at a venue with a time slot so there will be some urgency to your timeline; it’s not a relaxed elopement experience like other places in the mountains. Also, Pretty Place is not really close to anything, and all the roads in and out are narrow and winding; so be careful assuming about your plans for getting around (our best tip: don’t combine locations on your day in both SC and NC: choose one side or the other).

Finally, Pretty Place is great for the ceremony itself, but there is so much more to the area. We’d love to help you create a full-day experience around it—one that includes exploring the beauty of the area and making memories together. Check out our guide below for more info!

4. Black Balsam Knob

  • Guests: Best for groups under 15 (ideally 10 or less); the trails and viewpoints work best for smaller gatherings.
  • Privacy: Weekday mornings or sunsets are the sweet spots for a peaceful experience. Please, don’t try to show up on an October weekend; you’ll find a traffic jam (trust us, we’ve seen it and it’s not a good experience)
  • Cost/Permits: No permits needed for small ceremonies.
  • Parking: Limited trailhead parking fills up very quickly; get there early. We mean early — often we’ve arrived before sunrise to get one of the last parking spots.
  • Best Times: Sunrise or sunset for golden light and endless views.
  • Best Fit: Couples seeking epic, storybook landscapes with diverse scenery and a touch of adventure.

Our Take: Black Balsam Knob feels like you’ve been dropped into another world—grassy balds, rocky outcrops, and mountain views that go on forever. The forests are reminisce of the PNW! The variety here is matched only by a few other places on the east coast, from our experience. It’s a fun adventure of secluded evergreen forests, open fields, big mountain views and rocky outcroppings.

The thing about Black Balsam Knob though is that everyone goes there. Literally, the whole world feels like it shows up on October weekends, especially. You just have to know when to show up to get it to yourself. Or… choose another place entirely. We know many epic places that are just as amazing and far more private.

Still though, the scenery of Black Balsam Knob is iconic to the area and the proximity to great vacation rentals and mountain towns with more to do and see really makes it a great part of your elopement day. Just make sure you are confident that the plan you have will be at a time where you know you’ll get a parking spot, and have a backup in place just in case.

5. Craggy Gardens

  • Guests: Great for intimate gatherings of up to 25 people.
  • Privacy: Early mornings or weekdays offer the most solitude; sunsets during the week can be a good time also.
  • Cost/Permits: Required by the Blue Ridge Parkway.
  • Parking: Ample parking with access from the visitor center and picnic area, but it can fill up in peak season.
  • Best Times: June for rhododendron blooms, fall for vibrant colors. Winter is magical but usually the Parkway is closed when it snows.
  • Best Fit: Couples who love lush greenery and a mix of garden vibes and mountain views.

Our Take: Craggy Gardens has this lush, dreamy vibe that’s like walking into a fairytale. From the blooming rhododendrons in early summer to the moody fog that rolls in, it’s a dreamy setting and an amazing spot for couples who want variety in their day. Whether you’re exchanging vows under the canopy of greenery or taking in the mountain views, this place feels intimate and a little magical—a perfect fit for couples who want their day to feel like an escape. There is about a 2 mile roundtrip hike to the top so if you’re bringing guests make sure they are ok with the distance!

Craggy Gardens is on the Blue Ridge Parkway which has many more beautiful spots for weddings — check out our full guide here! Blue Ridge Parkway Wedding.

6. Something Blue Mountain Venue

  • Guests: Accommodates up to 30 or so, making it great for micro-weddings.
  • Privacy: Fully private venue, so you have the space to yourselves.
  • Cost/Permits: Venue rental fees vary by season.
  • Parking: Plenty of parking onsite for guests.
  • Best Times: Mostly year-round, with indoor and outdoor options for a ceremony and reception.
  • Best Fit: For couples who want the convenience of a small venue with stunning mountain views.

Our Take: If you’re looking for a mix of natural beauty and modern convenience, Something Blue Mountain Venue is it. It’s perfect for couples who want that structured venue feel but still want the mountains to be front and center. With indoor and outdoor options, you’ve got flexibility no matter what the weather decides to do. This spot is great if you want to keep some comforts of a venue in your day while still soaking up those gorgeous views. Note that this is a venue though, so you’re booking a time slot and have to be out by a certain time — that can bring some stress into your day, so if you want to be more laidback regarding your timeline, we would choose a non-venue option.

7. Appalachian Trail

  • Guests: Works best for elopements or small groups; realistically very small groups, like 5 or so.
  • Privacy: Remote trail sections offer amazing seclusion.
  • Cost/Permits: None.
  • Parking: Trailhead parking is typically limited
  • Best Times: Late spring through fall for lush greenery and gorgeous color on the mountains.
  • Best Fit: Adventurous couples who are up for hiking miles and truly unplugging.

Our Take: The Appalachian Trail is pure adventure. For couples who don’t mind hiking a bit to find those epic, secluded spots, it’s the best way of all of these options to find seclusion in the wild. Whether it’s a mountaintop view or a quiet forest clearing, this trail offers endless possibilities for a day that’s all about exploring and connecting. If you’re dreaming of a day that feels unplugged, grounded, and just the two of you (with maybe a few loved ones), this is your spot. Our advice is to plan on an overnight to really get out into the wild!

8. Boone, NC

  • Guests: Flexible, with locations for both elopements for two and larger gatherings at small venues.
  • Privacy: There are definitely off-the-beaten-path spots for a quiet, private experience; but also some locations can be quite crowded depending on the season.
  • Cost/Permits: Varies by location
  • Parking: Most trailhead parking areas are usually small and limited.
  • Best Times: Spring for wildflowers, fall for the colors; summer for fun at waterfalls or mountain streams; winter has the town bustling as well with many ski resorts nearby.
  • Best Fit: Couples who want a mix of charming mountain-town vibes and breathtaking nature.

Our Take: Boone has this laid-back mountain town vibe that makes it easy to feel at home if you’re from a small town. It’s perfect for couples who want a mix of adventure and just enough comforts of town nearby—think breathtaking mountain views all within easy reach of great places to stay and eat. There’s a lot to do in the area too, making it a destination without all the rush and traffic of larger cities like Asheville.

9. Pisgah National Forest

  • Guests: Practically speaking, smaller groups of 15 or less work best.
  • Privacy: Very popular area for elopement destinations, but you can find solitude if you know the hidden gems.
  • Cost/Permits: None
  • Parking: Trailhead parking is typically small and fills quickly on weekends and busy seasons.
  • Best Times: Late spring to see green and blooms; summer for mild days at high elevation; early fall to see the first of color.
  • Best Fit: Couples who want to explore diverse landscapes such as waterfalls, forests & epic views all in one day.

Our Take: Pisgah National Forest is like nature’s playground—waterfalls, sweeping mountain views, and lush green forests everywhere you turn. If you’re the kind of couple that wants to explore a bit of everything, this place is it. There’s a mix of iconic spots and hidden gems, so whether you’re dreaming of a quiet vow exchange by a waterfall or a scenic overlook, we’ll help you find your perfect spot. 10. Asheville Area

  • Guests: Flexible; plenty of locations and small venues for both intimate elopements and small weddings.
  • Privacy: One of the busiest areas of NC for elopements, so be careful where you choose and when you go.
  • Cost/Permits: Mostly free in natural areas but some locations require permits.
  • Parking: Some trailheads have ample parking and some are very limited
  • Best Times: Late spring through fall is the best season. Winter can be magical if you can catch snow at the higher elevations!
  • Best Fit: Couples who want a mix of mountain magic and conveniences of the city nearby.

Our Take: Asheville has nearly everything—amazing food, vibrant culture, and easy access to some of the most stunning elopement locations in North Carolina. If you want your day to be a mix of adventure and luxury stays and experiences, Asheville is where it’s at. You can start the day exploring the mountains and end it with a private dinner or even a brewery stop. It’s not as private as other areas in North Carolina but the diversity of activities, elopement locations, restaurants, lodging and more make it a great place for a destination elopement!

Bonus #11: Private Airbnb or VRBO Wedding

  • Guests: Typically less than 15; some are event friendly and allow up to 75 or more.
  • Privacy: Fully private.
  • Cost/Permits: In addition to the nightly rate, some hosts charge an event fee for groups over standard occupancy.
  • Parking: Onsite parking is typically limited as many of the best homes are perched on the edge of a mountain with small driveways; carpooling or group transportation is a must.
  • Best Times: Year-round. Rates are highest in October!
  • Best Fit: Couples who want privacy, convenience, and a place all to their own to experience.

Our Take: There’s something super special about eloping at a private Airbnb or VRBO. It’s like hiding away in your own little world where you can say your vows, celebrate with guests, and stay the night—all in one place. Whether it’s a gorgeous A-frame cabin for two tucked in the woods or a luxury estate with mountain views, we’ll help you find the perfect spot. This is for couples who want privacy, flexibility, and a day that feels like home.

Why You Should Choose a North Carolina Elopement

North Carolina is a land of contrasts in the best way possible. From the rugged peaks of the Blue Ridge Mountains to the charming towns nestled along its edges, the state offers a stunning variety of landscapes. No matter the time of year, there’s something beautiful waiting for you. Beyond its beauty, North Carolina provides the perfect balance of peacefulness and adventure for couples looking to elope. Whether you want to hike to a secluded mountaintop, say your vows in an iconic chapel, or relax with family at a private Airbnb, this state has it all.

A North Carolina Elopement is perfect for you if…

  • You want an incredible diversity of outdoor adventures to choose from while having wedding day conveniences nearby — from as simple as a few vendors to help with your elopement or a celebration with loved ones at a reception.
  • You want the best epic mountain views in the Southeast
  • Waterfalls are definitely part of your elopement vision!
  • You like the charm of small mountain towns; or you want big city conveniences nearby
  • You want to elope in the summer and escape the heat of the lowlands
  • You‘re looking for snow on the ground in winter!

North Carolina Elopement Planning Checklist

Planning an elopement is about more than picking a gorgeous location—it’s about creating a day that feels entirely yours. Here’s a sneak peek into our planning process, designed to help you craft a personalized and meaningful experience:

1. Start with Your Vision

It’s easy to dive straight into locations, but before that, take a moment to think about the heart of your elopement: Why are you eloping, and what do you envision for your day? Do you dream of an intimate ceremony with just the two of you, or a quiet celebration with close family? Starting with your “why” keeps everything focused and ensures that every decision reflects your vision.

2. Choose the Best Season

North Carolina’s seasons offer incredible variety, but it’s important to know what to expect. For example, spring doesn’t arrive in the mountains until late April or May—blooms take patience! Summer offers lush greenery and a cooler escape from the heat, while fall brings vibrant foliage (and lots of crowds). Winter, on the other hand, is peaceful and offers clear, breathtaking views. Make sure you choose a season that delivers the landscape you’re dreaming of for your photos.

3. Find the Perfect Ceremony Spot

Whether it’s a secluded waterfall, a luxury vacation rental, or a spot with epic mountain views, your ceremony location sets the tone for your day. Consider factors like guest count, accessibility, and privacy. Often, the more guests you have, the more you might need to compromise on privacy due to accessibility needs.

4. Consider Plans for Your Whole Day

Your elopement day is about more than just the ceremony—it’s about the entire experience. How do you want the day to feel from start to finish? Do you picture yourselves exploring the wild together, sharing a private picnic, or enjoying a cozy dinner with loved ones? A well-rounded day creates depth and meaning. Don’t make the mistake of rushing through the ceremony and leaving the rest of the day feeling anticlimactic!

5. Build a Realistic Timeline

One of the biggest mistakes couples make is underestimating how much time everything takes. Hair and makeup, getting ready, and traveling between locations all add up! Our top tip: Write down how long you think things will take, then double it. A flexible timeline allows room for unscripted, meaningful moments, so you can soak in every part of the day without rushing. Elopements should feel calm and intentional—not like a whirlwind traditional wedding.

6. Delegate Tasks for a Stress-Free Day

Another common mistake? Trying to do it all yourselves. If you’re managing every detail, you’re not fully present. Assign tasks to trusted friends or hire professionals to handle logistics. From managing vendors to coordinating decor, letting others step in allows you to relax and enjoy your day. (Pro tip: We handle day-of coordination for you, so you don’t have to worry about a thing!)

7. Choose Lodging, Vendors, and the Details

Lodging often doubles as a venue (even if just for getting ready), so it’s worth choosing a vacation rental that fits your needs, photographs well, and provides enough space for you and your vendors. Speaking of vendors, even small elopements may need a helping hand—hair and makeup, flowers, cake, or even a private chef are all details to consider. We’ll help connect you with the best.

8. Handle the Legalities

Getting a North Carolina marriage license is straightforward but requires planning. Learn more about the process here: How to get married in NC. The most important thing to remember is that two witnesses are required!

While we’ve outlined these steps as a checklist, the reality is that elopement planning is a dynamic process. You may need to revisit earlier steps and adjust along the way, and that’s where we come in. With our guidance, you can relax knowing that every detail will come together seamlessly, resulting in a personalized experience that’s truly unforgettable.

All your questions answered about eloping in North Carolina

For a North Carolina elopement, expect a range from $2,000 to $10,000+ depending of if you try to DIY or have full planning services (which is our specialty); venue/location, group size, photography coverage, permits, accommodations, if you decide on a reception, and many other options for services. The beauty of an elopement is its flexibility—you can have an adventure for just the two of you, a whole day to enjoy just for yourselves, or a multi-dimensional experience blending an intimate ceremony with guests with multiple locations to adventure, a private chef, and luxury lodging. There really is no limit to what’s possible!

Looking for more help to estimate the budget you need for your elopement? Check out our Free Download: Elopement Budget Spreadsheet.

It depends on the location. Many state and national parks require permits for ceremonies, especially in scenic areas. Private venues and vacation rentals may also have specific rules or fees.

We recommend attire that’s both comfortable and reflects your style. Keep the terrain and weather in mind—sturdy shoes for mountain trails and layers for cooler temps are great ideas; and bring gear that will take care of you no matter the weather (we help you with lists of what to bring and pack). And don’t forget to add personal touches like a statement jacket or custom bouquet for a unique look!

Absolutely! Many couples invite close family and friends, creating an intimate atmosphere while keeping the focus on their love story. The size of your guest list will influence your location options—smaller groups offer more flexibility, while larger gatherings may require booking a private venue or event-friendly rental. More details here: Asheville Elopement with Guests — tips and more.

NC has a lot to offer regarding vacation rentals! Read more here on how to shop for the best one for your elopement: Airbnb wedding venues NC.

It depends on your guest count and vision for the day. If it’s just the two of you or a small group, planning can happen in as little as two months, though six months to a year gives you the most flexibility and the lowest stress planning experience. For larger gatherings, we recommend starting as early as possible to ensure availability for accommodations, vendors, and permits — like at least a year in advance!

Yes! Many of our couples choose to have something like a reception at the end of their day. It might look like a picnic for two or a private chef dinner, to a small reception either at a nearby venue or a vacation rental. Our elopements with guests love settings with string lights and dinner under the stars, or a large home with indoor space to entertain. There’s lots of options and we can help design a reception that perfectly complements your elopement day!

Every timeline is unique, but most of ours include getting ready, possibly a first look, the ceremony, photos with loved ones, and time for just the two of you to explore and soak it all in. Anything shorter just feels like you missed out on time with each other, honestly. Our timelines are crafted to ensures your day flows naturally, leaving plenty of space for the meaningful, unscripted moments.

Of course! Whether it’s a short hike to a breathtaking mountain vista, a private picnic by a waterfall, or ending the day with a campfire under the stars, your day can be as adventurous as you want. We specialize in weaving these elements into your timeline to create an experience that feels like you.

There are three main paths for planning an elopement:

  • Full-service custom planning (like us): We don’t copy/paste someone else’s elopement to create your day. We provide a highly personalized experience, handling everything from creating a custom location guide for you to coordinating all the details on your day. Check out all that’s included in our packages here.
  • Partial planning services: These are a middle ground between the all-inclusive and full-service; there is an element of DIY but you also have some flexibility on customization.
  • All-inclusive companies: These offer pre-packaged elopements with minimal customization.

  • Full-service planning (our specialty): Everything is tailored to you. We don’t just provide a list of locations—we craft an entire day based on your love story and preferences. This ensures your elopement is unique, meaningful, and an experience no one else has seen before. Check out all that’s included in our packages here.
  • Partial planning services: More flexibility to personalize but limited to typical locations in the area
  • All-inclusive elopements: Think simple and quick; like a ceremony and a few photos. You’re left to choose the location and decide if it’s a good fit for you.

There’s a common misconception that elopements are short, quick ceremonies—just an hour or two, say your vows, take a few photos, and you’re done. While that’s true for many all-inclusive elopement packages, what we offer is a much more immersive and intentional experience.

Our elopements typically span 8 to 12 hours for a single day or even a multi-day experience (e.g., 10 hours on day one + 4 hours on day two). Why to this extent? Because we believe your elopement should be about more than just the ceremony—it’s about creating a full day (or two) that tells your love story, filled with meaningful moments, breathtaking adventures, and time to soak it all in.

Here’s what a custom, immersive elopement timeline might include:

  • Getting ready separately with your closest loved ones
  • A private first look moment
  • Exploring multiple scenic locations, such as mountaintops, waterfalls, or hidden trails
  • A beautifully crafted ceremony in an epic, private location
  • A celebratory picnic, champagne toast, or catered dinner
  • Time for personal moments, like writing letters, dancing under the stars, or relaxing by a fire

If you want a day that feels more like an incredible journey—a day or two filled with unforgettable memories, laughter, and connection—our custom elopement planning might be the perfect fit for you.

Absolutely! In fact, planning is one of the core services we provide. Unlike many companies that offer only basic coordination or a limited set of pre-packaged options, we take a full-service, comprehensive approach to elopement planning. Our goal is to craft a completely personalized experience that reflects who you are as a couple and ensures that every detail is thoughtfully handled. Check out all that’s included in our packages here.

Here’s what our elopement planning process looks like:

  • Custom Location Selection Whether you’re dreaming of a mountaintop ceremony at sunrise, a secluded waterfall, or a private Airbnb with scenic views, we help you find the perfect spot based on your vision. Our insider knowledge of Western NC (and the Southeast) means you’ll have access to hidden gems and off-the-beaten-path locations that most people never discover. There are a massive amount of options out there, and our job is to curate those down to a list which best suits your needs — so you don’t have to do the hard work of researching on your own.
  • Permit Assistance: Navigating the various permits required for public lands can be overwhelming. We handle the entire process, ensuring everything is in place so you don’t have to worry about a thing.
  • Vendor Recommendations: From officiants and florists to private chefs and musicians, we connect you with trusted local vendors who align with your style and preferences. We know which vendors work well in remote locations and how to coordinate them seamlessly.
  • Expert Timeline Design: We create a detailed, but also flexible timeline for your day that ensures everything flows naturally, with built-in time for spontaneous moments and “stopping to smell the flowers” on your adventures. The right timeline is both an art and science to keep things efficient but flow organically, and we’ve had years of experience creating them!
  • Day-Of Coordination: Think of us as both your photographers and your personal guides. On the day of your elopement, we’re there not just to capture every moment, but to ensure the day runs smoothly—from timing the hike perfectly for golden hour light to carrying “just in case” items for you, to helping you relax and enjoy every moment.
  • Backup Plans & Contingency Options: Mountain weather can be unpredictable, but we’ve got you covered with well-thought-out backup plans & intimate knowledge of how our mountains “behave.” Whether it’s shifting locations due to unexpected closures or adjusting the timeline to accommodate weather changes, we stay flexible so your day stays stress-free.

We don’t just help you plan your elopement—we help you create a one-of-a-kind experience that you’ll remember forever. By the time your day arrives, you can relax knowing every detail has been taken care of.
