How to Elope in the NC Mountains

Curious about how to elope in the NC Mountains? We’ve written this couples guide just for you!

How to Elope in the NC Mountains

1. Research and acquire permit(s)

Yes … there is a little bit of legal & paperwork to deal with when it comes to your ceremony location. But it’s worth it! Plus we totally know how to handle all of this for you anyway, so not to worry.

Some locations in Western North Carolina may not require a permit, but many popular locations do. For example, the Blue Ridge Parkway definitely requires one (and definitely apply well in advance if you can!). Here is where you can find out more about getting your Blue Ridge Parkway Wedding Permit.

Of course, before applying for a permit you should decide on a location! To help you decide, check out our companion guided here – where to elope in Asheville.

2. Consider the weather for your date.

Summer is a glorious time to visit the mountains. You can have a warm day in the city but cool and crisp at elevation. Spring and Fall are wonderful times if you want to avoid the heat altogether and like a little bit of a chill. Winter – can be a bit tricky. It’s the best time to get the mountains to yourself, but the Blue Ridge Parkway is often closed (especially December through March) so you’d need to plan around the closures.

Another note – if you’re interested in the Blue Ridge Parkway for your elopement, they don’t issue permits in October (and holiday weekends).

3. How to Elope in the NC Mountains? Relax. Seriously – don’t rush anything.

Eloping is nothing like having a big wedding. Lots of couples get railroaded into the big wedding machine, and end up forced into a timeline of the day. You don’t have to worry about any of that when you elope!

Likewise, think bigger than your ceremony. Even better, think bigger than just one day. This is an adventure experience you’re embarking on together, after all. Would you plan a fun vacation to a beautiful spot for just one day? We didn’t think so!

Consider your elopement as a complete experience, an adventure together where you can enjoy the time and doing all the things you love – together. Want to hike to a few peaks in the area? Always wanted to explore to an awesome waterfall? This is your time to do it!

4. Stay at a unique Airbnb that fits your vibe.

When it comes to planning out an elopement experience for our couples, this is our #1 recommendation. Apart from your ceremony location, your choice of where you stay is a huge part of your experience!

Honestly, we can’t remember the last time we stayed in a generic hotel. Why go with normal when you can find an Airbnb near Asheville that has all the ‘feels?’

Imagine your own private deck to enjoy the sunrise over the mountains with your morning coffee together. Or a hot tub to enjoy at the end of your hiking day. Fire pit outside to cuddle up next to. There are so many possibilities!

5. Book awesome people to help you with your day

Whether you’re looking for an officiant, a florist, a hair and make-up artist – we’re here to help you with our top recommendations!

6. Bring your hiking boots!

So many beautiful locations are only a mile or two hike away from the road. Why not avoid the crowds, get off the beaten path and enjoy some time to yourselves?

There you have it – our short guide on how to elope in the NC mountains. If you’d like help finding the best scenic spots for you & planning out an epic day, we’d love to hear from you!
