North Carolina is not one elopement destination. It’s a massive canvas of completely different landscapes, access points, guest-count limitations, weather patterns, and lodging options. You’re not just choosing a pretty backdrop; you’re choosing the kind of experience you want your wedding day to become.

2026 Status Update: Eloping After Hurricane Helene

The North Carolina mountains are open and welcoming elopements. While some areas near the Blue Ridge Parkway are still undergoing long-term restoration, the vast majority of our cataloged locations in Boone, Highlands, Asheville & across Western North Carolina are beautiful and accessible.

Our Promise: We have personally re-scouted 100% of the locations listed below. You won’t find “Road Closed” surprises on our watch.

Best Places to Elope in North Carolina

From iconic mountain spots in the wild to elopement friendly venues and everything in between, here’s a top ten list of unforgettable North Carolina elopement locations:

1. Grandfather Mountain

• Guests: Perfect for up to 20 guests at park overlooks.
• Privacy: The magic happens on weekdays or at sunset when the crowds fade, and it feels like the mountain is just yours. Definitely avoid weekends and holidays!
• Cost/Permits: Cost varies and also take into account park admission fees.
• Parking: Parking can get tricky during busy seasons; carpooling makes things easier.
• Best Times: Spring or fall when the views are clear and vibrant; sunset is typically the best golden hour (most of the views face west).
• Best Fit: For couples who want a touch of adventure without a hike, and who love epic views and the grandeur of the mountains.

Status note: Grandfather Mountain has stopped accepting weddings since 2024 and originally stated on their website that they would release an updated policy by end of 2025 but they have since changed that language to say 2026. If you love the idea of Grandfather mountain, please reach out to us for alternatives that we have cataloged!

Our Take: Grandfather Mountain has a kind of bold, dramatic energy that’s hard to describe but unforgettable once you’re there. If you’re a couple that loves sweeping views and just a little bit of adventure, this place is made for you. It’s one of those spots where you can take it all in, and feel how big the world is just a few steps from parking. It’s super popular so to truly feel the magic, plan for a weekday or right before the park closes—you’ll dodge the crowds and have more of that mountain magic to yourselves. 2. Roan Mountain

• Guests: Practically speaking, works well for up to 15 people in the meadows or along the trails.
• Privacy: If you’re willing to hike further than most everyone else, you’ll find some incredibly peaceful, secluded spots.
• Cost/Permits: No permits required for small gatherings.
• Parking: Trailhead parking is very limited, especially during peak seasons—carpooling, arriving for sunrise, or during the week are best.
• Best Times: June for blooming rhododendrons, fall for vibrant colors, and winter for snow-covered landscapes. Usually the road is “clear” during winter but have backup plans, this is high elevation! Note: the National Forest requests no weddings at Roan during the middle weeks of June during bloom season.
• Best Fit: Couples looking for 360deg views, big open spaces, mountain meadows and willing to hike to solitude.

Note that the day-use area side of the mountain is still closed after Helene (as of 2026) but the side towards Round Bald is open.

Our Take: Roan Mountain feels like stepping into another world above everything else. With its wide-open meadows and 360-degree views, it’s perfect for couples who want a peaceful, yet epic vibe. It’s best if you’re okay with a hike beyond the first mile to find those secluded spots that feel like they’re just yours. Bonus points if you come during rhododendron season—the blooms make it even more breathtaking. This is for couples who want their day to feel quiet, intentional, and deeply connected to nature, and don’t mind “working” a little bit harder than everyone else to find their own spot on the mountain. 3. Pretty Place (Symmes Chapel)

• Guests: Accommodates up to 200 people, but smaller gatherings feel very intimate in the chapel.
• Privacy: Your reserved time slot guarantees a private ceremony which is a great aspect
• Cost/Permits: Rental fees range around $3,500, depending on the season.
• Parking: Ample onsite parking for large groups.
• Best Times: Sunrise is unbeatable for its peacefulness and light.
• Best Fit: Couples looking for a faith-centered ceremony with breathtaking mountain views.

Our Take: Pretty Place Chapel lives up to its name—it’s simply stunning. While techinically in South Carolina, we include it here because it is right next to the border with North Carolina. There’s something so powerful about standing there, surrounded by family, with the mountains stretching out in front of you, acknowledging our Creator God who made this beautiful earth we get to explore. It’s perfect for couples who want a day that feels grounded in faith and love. If you’re dreaming of a ceremony that’s equal parts meaningful and awe-inspiring, this is it.

Just a few things to know: you’ll be at a venue with a time slot so there will be some urgency to your timeline; it’s not a relaxed elopement experience like other places in the mountains. Also, Pretty Place is not really close to anything, and all the roads in and out are narrow and winding; so be careful assuming about your plans for getting around (our best tip: don’t combine locations on your day in both SC and NC: choose one side or the other).

4. Black Balsam Knob

• Guests: Best for groups under 15 (ideally 10 or less); the trails and viewpoints work best for smaller gatherings.
• Privacy: Weekday mornings or sunsets are the sweet spots for a peaceful experience. Please, don’t try to show up on an October weekend; you’ll find a traffic jam (trust us, we’ve seen it and it’s not a good experience)
• Cost/Permits: No permits needed for small ceremonies.
• Parking: Limited trailhead parking fills up very quickly; get there early. We mean early — often we’ve arrived before sunrise to get one of the last parking spots.
• Best Times: Sunrise or sunset for golden light and endless views.
• Best Fit: Couples seeking epic, storybook landscapes with diverse scenery and a touch of adventure.

Our Take: Black Balsam Knob feels like you’ve been dropped into another world—grassy balds, rocky outcrops, and mountain views that go on forever. The forests are reminisce of the PNW! The variety here is matched only by a few other places on the east coast, from our experience. It’s a fun adventure of secluded evergreen forests, open fields, big mountain views and rocky outcroppings.

The thing about Black Balsam Knob though is that everyone goes there. Literally, the whole world feels like it shows up on October weekends, especially. You just have to know when to show up to get it to yourself. Or… choose another place entirely. We know many epic places that are just as amazing and far more private. Still though, the scenery of Black Balsam Knob is iconic to the area and the proximity to great vacation rentals and mountain towns with more to do and see really makes it a great part of your elopement day. Just make sure you are confident that the plan you have will be at a time where you know you’ll get a parking spot, and have a backup in place just in case.

5. Craggy Gardens

• Guests: Great for intimate gatherings of up to 25 people.
• Privacy: Early mornings or weekdays offer the most solitude; sunsets during the week can be a good time also.
• Cost/Permits: Required by the Blue Ridge Parkway.
• Parking: Ample parking with access from the visitor center and picnic area, but it can fill up in peak season.
• Best Times: June for rhododendron blooms, fall for vibrant colors. Winter is magical but usually the Parkway is closed when it snows.
• Best Fit: Couples who love lush greenery and a mix of garden vibes and mountain views.

Our Take: Craggy Gardens has this lush, dreamy vibe that’s like walking into a fairytale. From the blooming rhododendrons in early summer to the moody fog that rolls in, it’s a dreamy setting and an amazing spot for couples who want variety in their day. Whether you’re exchanging vows under the canopy of greenery or taking in the mountain views, this place feels intimate and a little magical—a perfect fit for couples who want their day to feel like an escape. There is about a 2 mile roundtrip hike to the top so if you’re bringing guests make sure they are ok with the distance!

6. Something Blue Mountain Venue

• Guests: Accommodates up to 30 or so, making it great for micro-weddings.
• Privacy: Fully private venue, so you have the space to yourselves.
• Cost/Permits: Venue rental fees vary by season.
• Parking: Plenty of parking onsite for guests.
• Best Times: Mostly year-round, with indoor and outdoor options for a ceremony and reception.
• Best Fit: For couples who want the convenience of a small venue with stunning mountain views.

Our Take: If you’re looking for a mix of natural beauty and modern convenience, Something Blue Mountain Venue is it. It’s perfect for couples who want that structured venue feel but still want the mountains to be front and center. With indoor and outdoor options, you’ve got flexibility no matter what the weather decides to do. This spot is great if you want to keep some comforts of a venue in your day while still soaking up those gorgeous views. Note that this is a venue though, so you’re booking a time slot and have to be out by a certain time — that can bring some stress into your day, so if you want to be more laidback regarding your timeline, we would choose a non-venue option.

7. Appalachian Trail

• Guests: Works best for elopements or small groups; realistically very small groups, like 5 or so.
• Privacy: Remote trail sections offer amazing seclusion.
• Cost/Permits: None.
• Parking: Trailhead parking is typically limited
• Best Times: Late spring through fall for lush greenery and gorgeous color on the mountains.
• Best Fit: Adventurous couples who are up for hiking miles and truly unplugging.

Our Take: The Appalachian Trail is pure adventure. For couples who don’t mind hiking a bit to find those epic, secluded spots, it’s the best way of all of these options to find seclusion in the wild. Whether it’s a mountaintop view or a quiet forest clearing, this trail offers endless possibilities for a day that’s all about exploring and connecting. If you’re dreaming of a day that feels unplugged, grounded, and just the two of you (with maybe a few loved ones), this is your spot. 8. Boone, NC

• Guests: Flexible, with locations for both elopements for two and larger gatherings at small venues.
• Privacy: There are definitely off-the-beaten-path spots for a quiet, private experience; but also some locations can be quite crowded depending on the season.
• Cost/Permits: Varies by location
• Parking: Most trailhead parking areas are usually small and limited.
• Best Times: Spring for wildflowers, fall for the colors; summer for fun at waterfalls or mountain streams; winter has the town bustling as well with many ski resorts nearby.
• Best Fit: Couples who want a mix of charming mountain-town vibes and breathtaking nature.

Our Take: Boone has this laid-back mountain town vibe that makes it easy to feel at home if you’re from a small town. It’s perfect for couples who want a mix of adventure and just enough comforts of town nearby—think breathtaking mountain views all within easy reach of great places to stay and eat. 9. Pisgah National Forest

• Guests: Practically speaking, smaller groups of 15 or less work best.
• Privacy: Very popular area for elopement destinations, but you can find solitude if you know the hidden gems.
• Cost/Permits: None
• Parking: Trailhead parking is typically small and fills quickly on weekends and busy seasons.
• Best Times: Late spring to see green and blooms; summer for mild days at high elevation; early fall to see the first of color.
• Best Fit: Couples who want to explore diverse landscapes such as waterfalls, forests & epic views all in one day.

Our Take: Pisgah National Forest is like nature’s playground—waterfalls, sweeping mountain views, and lush green forests everywhere you turn. If you’re the kind of couple that wants to explore a bit of everything, this place is it. 10. Asheville Area

• Guests: Flexible; plenty of locations and small venues for both intimate elopements and small weddings.
• Privacy: One of the busiest areas of NC for elopements, so be careful where you choose and when you go.
• Cost/Permits: Mostly free in natural areas but some locations require permits.
• Parking: Some trailheads have ample parking and some are very limited
• Best Times: Late spring through fall is the best season. Winter can be magical if you can catch snow at the higher elevations!
• Best Fit: Couples who want a mix of mountain magic and conveniences of the city nearby.

Our Take: Asheville has nearly everything—amazing food, vibrant culture, and easy access to some of the most stunning elopement locations in North Carolina. If you want your day to be a mix of adventure and luxury stays and experiences, Asheville is where it’s at. You can start the day exploring the mountains and end it with a private dinner or even a brewery stop. It’s not as private as other areas in North Carolina but the diversity of activities, elopement locations, restaurants, lodging and more make it a great place for a destination elopement! 11. Private Airbnb or VRBO Wedding

• Guests: Typically less than 15; some are event friendly and allow up to 40 or more.
• Privacy: Fully private.
• Cost/Permits: In addition to the nightly rate, some hosts charge an event fee for groups over standard occupancy.
• Parking: Onsite parking is typically limited as many of the best homes are perched on the edge of a mountain with small driveways; carpooling or group transportation is a must.
• Best Times: Year-round. Rates are highest in October!
• Best Fit: Couples who want privacy, convenience, and a place all to their own to experience.

Our Take: There’s something super special about eloping at a private Airbnb or VRBO. It’s like hiding away in your own little world where you can say your vows, celebrate with guests, and stay the night—all in one place. Whether it’s a gorgeous A-frame cabin for two tucked in the woods or a luxury estate with mountain views, we’ll help you find the perfect spot. 12. Wayah Bald

• Guests: Best for groups under 25 (ideally 15 or less); the trails and viewpoints work best for smaller gatherings.
• Privacy: Weekday mornings or sunsrise are the sweet spots for a peaceful experience. Please, don’t try to show up on an October weekend; even though this place is rather remote (about 1hr from Franklin, NC) it’s quite busy and if there aren’t a lot of tourists around you, there will be other couples there for photoshoots.
• Cost/Permits: No permits needed for small ceremonies.
• Parking: The parking is sufficient for a group of 25 if you’re carpooling. Note that the last part of the drive is a bumpy gravel road so be prepared!
• Best Times: Sunrise or through mid-morning is the best for light. Sunset is on the opposite side of the tower and not the best time.
• Best Fit: Couples seeking a remote, group friendly spot with big views.
• Accessibility: One of the few “nearly” handicap accessible spots in the wild; the trail from parking to the top is paved (but note that the parking area is gravel)

Our Take: We love Wayah Bald in the right context. During the week it works great for a group of up to 25 or so with ample parking. The stonework is gorgeous and it’s a spacious area for a ceremony. We would be very careful planning a wedding here on a weekend, especially in October because this spot gets a lot of traffic for how remote it is. Wayah Road is a popular motorcycling and driving road, so in good weather you’ll see lots of visitors here. Also in comparison to the Asheville area, Franklin does not have as good a selection of Airbnbs so it can be somewhat limiting when planning for a large group gather. 13. Max Patch

• Guests: Best for a just-us elopement; potentially up to 10.
• Privacy: Weekday mornings or sunrise/sunsets are the sweet spots for the best experience. Don’t recommend weekends, especially in October.
• Cost/Permits: No permits needed for small ceremonies in Pisgah (but see below).
• Parking: Limited trailhead parking fills up very quickly.
• Best Times: Sunrise or sunset for golden light and endless views.
• Best Fit: Couples seeking epic, layered mountain landscapes and willing to go a bit further “out in the wild” to experience it.

Our Take: Max Patch is absolutely lovely but because it has been overused in the past, Pisgah National Forest has been requesting that no weddings occur there for the place to recover. Out of respect for the land—and because we want your ceremony to be private, not surrounded by 200 sunset-watchers—we have several ‘secret’ balds in our private catalog that offer the same 360-degree views without the crowds or the environmental impact.

14. Linville Gorge

• Guests: Strictly for “Just-Us” elopements or very small groups (10 people max).
• Privacy: Low to Moderate. It has become incredibly popular. We only recommend sunrise or sunset on specific weekdays. In October, even a Tuesday sunrise can feel like a “public event”—we’ve seen multiple couples lined up for the same rock outcropping at 6:00 AM.
• Cost/Permits: No permits needed for small ceremonies in Pisgah (but see below).
• Parking: Trailhead parking is a major constraint; many areas require high-clearance vehicles (like Old NC 105).
• Best Times: Sunrise or sunset for golden light and endless views.
• Best Fit: Couples seeking a rugged, canyon landscape who are willing to hike and prioritize “Wilderness” over “Polished.”

2026 Access Update (Post-Helene)

As of 2026, Linville Gorge access is in a state of flux. While many USFS trails have reopened, the Blue Ridge Parkway sections south of the Linville Falls spur (MP 317) are under ongoing repair. This means the “usual” access points are more crowded than ever as visitors are funneled into fewer trailheads. We monitor these road closures weekly to ensure our “Plan A” is actually reachable.

Our Stewardship Take

Linville Gorge is a designated Wilderness Area, which carries a much higher level of stewardship responsibility than a standard National Forest.

Privacy Management: Because of the recent surge in crowds, we are very selective about when we go here. If you want Linville Gorge in the fall, we will work with you to find a “precision timing” window to ensure you aren’t sharing your vows with a crowd of hikers.

The Group Limit: In the Wilderness, the group size is strictly limited to 10 people (including us!).

The “Gray Area”: The boundaries between the rugged Wilderness and the “General” National Forest are often where the best ceremony spots hide. We understand these borders intimately. We won’t take you somewhere that violates Forest Service regulations or compromises the “Wilderness character” of the land.

15. Great Smoky Mountains National Park (North Carolina side)

• Guests: Ideally 15 or less for most overlooks. While historic park churches can theoretically hold up to 50, parking often becomes the true limiting factor.
• Privacy: Low to Moderate. As the most visited National Park in the US, “private” spots are rare near Newfound Gap road (the main route through the park). Seclusion here is earned by driving deeper into the NC side (Cherokee/Bryson City) or hiking.
• Logistics (as of 2026):
  • Permits: A $50 Special Use Permit is required. We recommend sending applications in far in advance of the recommended window!
  • Parking Tags: As of 2023, parking tags are required for all vehicles stopping for more than 15 minutes. A wedding permit does not guarantee a parking spot—timing is everything.
• Best Times: Late spring to see green and blooms; summer for mild days at high elevation; early fall to see the first of color.
• Best Fit: Couples who want the “Grandeur of the Smokies” but prefer the quieter, forest-heavy atmosphere of the North Carolina entrance and small town vibe of Bryson City over the Gatlinburg bustle.

2026 Status Update: Post-Helene Recovery

While the Tennessee side saw less impact, some eastern, North Carolina sections of the park are still in a state of “dynamic recovery” following Helene. We should especially note Cataloochee Valley which is an approved ceremony site. Palmer chapel has reopened in 2025 but expect some lingering closures.

Our Take: The NC side of the Smokies is the park’s “Best Kept Secret.” While everyone else is fighting for a spot at Newfound Gap, we prefer the deeper, quiet beauty of the Bryson City entrance. Also, if you’re looking for the highest views in the park, search for Kuwohi. The peak was restored to its Cherokee name in 2024, and it remains the crown jewel of the park. 16. Nantahala National Forest

• Guests: Best for “Just-Us” elopements or small groups of 15 or less.
• Privacy: High. Because it sits further west toward the Tennessee border, it sees significantly less “day-trip” traffic from Asheville. There are still some super popular places to avoid, but you can find true solitude here, provided you know the gravel-road shortcuts.
• Cost/Permits: None
• Parking: Trailhead parking is typically small but is generally not an issue in the more remote spots. Some locations require a parking pass (pay on-site) but we usually avoid these since they are the most popular anyways.
• Best Times: Late spring to see green and blooms; summer for mild days at high elevation; early fall to see the first of color. Nantahala generally has lower peaks than Pisgah so will be warmer throughout the year (with some exceptions).
• Best Fit: Couples who want to escape from the touristy parts of western NC and get more into the wild.

Our Take: Nantahala National Forest is mostly about secluded forests, falling water, and wild spaces that make you feel like you’ve left civilization, with a few high peaks thrown in for variety (like Wayah Bald). Pisgah might have the most popular spots, but Nantahala is where we go for solitude.
