Some Asheville elopement guides include locations that are technically in the region, but not realistically part of an Asheville-based elopement day. Places like Roan Mountain, Linville Gorge, Nantahala National Forest, Highlands, and the Smokies can be incredible, but they usually work better as their own destination rather than something casually added to an Asheville elopement timeline.
For this guide, we’re focusing on places that actually make sense from an Asheville home base, whether as a ceremony location, Airbnb home base, or small private venue option.

Best Places to Elope in Asheville and the Surrounding Mountains
Black Balsam Knob
Black Balsam Knob is one of the most popular places to elope near Asheville because it offers wide-open, high-elevation mountain views without a long hike. It works best for sunrise, weekdays, and very small groups who are comfortable with uneven terrain and exposed weather (think high winds and surprise rain even if it’s not in the forecast). This is not a good fit for an October weekend with a large group.

Best for: just-us elopements, dramatic views, sunrise vows
Watch out for: limited trailhead parking, crowds in peak season, weather exposure

Craggy Gardens
Craggy Gardens is a classic Blue Ridge Parkway area with mountain views, greenery, and rhododendron blooms in early summer. It can work beautifully, but it is public, weather-dependent, and seasonal crowds matter. This is technically a Blue Ridge Parkway location, but we list it separately as it requires a hike and it’s not as easily accessible as the overlooks in the next section.
One important note: Craggy Flats Bald is currently listed by the NPS as temporarily unavailable for wedding permits due to Helene damage. Also, the NPS specifically states no wedding activity is allowed at the pinnacle or on the Pinnacle Trail. (National Park Service – Blue Ridge Parkway wedding permits link)

Blue Ridge Parkway Overlooks
The Blue Ridge Parkway is one of the most popular places to elope near Asheville because it offers mountain views without requiring a major hike. But not every overlook is available for wedding ceremonies, and not every overlook works well for the same kind of elopement.
For permitted Parkway ceremony locations near Asheville, the main options we consider are:
- MP 361.2 – Glassmine Falls Overlook — about 45–60 minutes from Asheville
- MP 367.6 – Craggy Flats Bald — about 35–45 minutes from Asheville, but currently temporarily unavailable due to Helene damage
- MP 407.7 – Buck Spring Gap — about 45–55 minutes from Asheville
- MP 431.0 – Haywood Jackson Overlook — about 1 hr 15–30 minutes from Asheville
- MP 433.3 – Roy Taylor Overlook — about 1 hr 20–35 minutes from Asheville
These locations can work well for small, simple ceremonies, but they are still public overlooks. You cannot close them off, and the permit does not give you exclusive use of the space. The Parkway also limits wedding permits to 25 total people, including the couple, officiant, photographer, and guests. (National Park Service)
This is why we don’t treat “Blue Ridge Parkway overlook” as one generic category. Each overlook has a different distance from Asheville, view, parking situation, privacy level, and guest experience. Choosing the right one depends on the full flow of your day, not just which overlook looks best in photos.
Best for: accessible mountain views, small groups, simple ceremonies
Watch out for: privacy, parking limitations, mountain weather, seasonal road closures, and permit availability. Also note: live flowers are not allowed.

Pisgah National Forest Waterfalls
Pisgah National Forest is one of the best areas near Asheville for couples who want forests, waterfalls, creeks, and a more immersive nature experience. The key is choosing the right waterfall, because easy-access falls are often crowded and more secluded waterfalls require hiking.
Waterfalls can be incredible as part of an Asheville elopement day, but they rarely work the way couples first imagine. If you are bringing guests, most waterfall locations become complicated quickly because of trail access, crowd levels, privacy, and safety. The latter is especially important – waterfall trails tend to be very slippery. The best waterfalls are safe to reach, have sufficient space for a wedding ceremony, and are aesthetically pleasing for weddings – not all waterfalls that look great in photos will work well for composition with couples.

Looking Glass Falls
Looking Glass Falls is one of the easiest waterfalls to access near Asheville, which makes it beautiful but very public. Because of its proximity to a major highway (it’s literally right off of US276 north of Brevard) it is usually better for a short stop during the day than a private ceremony with guests.
This is a great example of why “easy access” can be both a benefit and a drawback. If a waterfall is simple for you to reach, it is also simple for everyone else to reach.
While Looking Glass Falls is right off the highway and relatively easy to get to, be careful with safety as the falls put off a LOT of mist, and all the rocks below are slippery.

North Carolina Arboretum
The North Carolina Arboretum is one of the better Asheville-area options for couples who want accessible greenery, gardens, and a more structured natural setting without hiking. It does not have the wild, remote feel of a mountaintop or waterfall, but it can be a strong fit for couples who want something beautiful, simple, and easier for guests.
This is especially worth considering if accessibility matters, if guests are joining you, or if you want a garden-like environment close to Asheville.

Airbnb wedding venues near Asheville
Private Airbnbs give couples something public locations cannot: privacy, control, and space to gather with guests. But the property has to actually function for a wedding day, not just look beautiful online.
This is often one of the best options for couples who want an Asheville elopement with guests, because it lets you separate different parts of the experience: getting ready, ceremony, dinner, family time, and possibly an adventure away from the property.

We should point out though, vacation rentals are not venues so … while they offer a lot of conveniences at the end of the day you’re renting a house and a lot will need to be coordinated to have an event there. Small Unique Asheville Elopement Venues
For couples bringing guests, a small venue can sometimes create a better experience than trying to force a group into a public overlook or waterfall location. You still get an intimate feel, but with more structure, parking, restrooms, and backup options.
This does not mean you have to give up the elopement feeling, but what’s key is choosing the right venue. We’re not recommending wedding venues that have elopement packages. We do recommend unique venues that specialize in elopements. Choosing this route means the ceremony and guest experience may need a stronger home base, especially if accessibility, weather, or family comfort are priorities.

can be incredible elopement destinations.

What Most Asheville Elopement Location Lists Don’t Tell You
Most “best places to elope in Asheville” guides make these locations look interchangeable.
They are not.
A location that works beautifully for a just-us sunrise ceremony may be a terrible fit for 15 guests. A waterfall that looks secluded in photos may be packed by 10 a.m. A scenic overlook may be easy to access but offer almost no privacy.
That is why the best location is not always the most popular one.
It is the one that fits:
- your guest count
- your timing
- your privacy needs
- your mobility needs
- your weather backup
- and the way you want the day to feel

When Is the Best Time to Elope in Asheville?
Asheville can be beautiful year-round, but each season creates a very different kind of experience.
That’s why “best” really depends on what you want your day to feel like: lush and green, quiet and private, full of fall color, or wide-open and adventurous.
Spring Asheville Elopements (April – early June)
Spring brings fresh greenery, blooming wildflowers, and cooler mountain air. Lower elevations usually green up first, while higher elevations can still feel chilly or bare earlier in the season. For example, early May will still have buds on the highest elevation trees – and it will still look like “stick season” (what we call winter around here!)
Still, this can be a beautiful time for couples who want softer colors, comfortable temperatures, and far less intense crowds than peak fall.
Best for: first signs of green, early wildflowers, waterfalls, comfortable hiking weather
Watch out for: rain, muddy trails, chilly higher elevations
Summer Asheville Elopements (late June–August)
Summer in the Asheville area is incredible, with higher elevations bringing mild, comfortable temperatures. This is when the mountains are truly alive—vibrant greens, blooming rhododendrons, and perfect conditions for early morning hikes. Waterfalls are often at their best, high-elevation locations are more accessible, and longer daylight gives you more flexibility with your timeline.
Plus, summer is typically less busy than fall, making it easier to find privacy and avoid crowds. Just watch out for afternoon thunderstorms and have a backup plan (we always plan multiple backup plans!)
One of our favorite ways to create a summer elopement experience is to pair a sunrise hike with a brunch picnic for two, and then escaping the heat of the day with dipping toes in (or a swim) at the base of a secluded waterfall!
Best for: waterfalls, green forests, long days, high-elevation locations
Watch out for: afternoon storms, humidity, crowds at easy-access waterfall spots
Fall (September–November)
Fall is Asheville’s peak season, thanks to the amazing light show that the trees bless us with each year. Vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows create a backdrop that is truly magical. However, fall also brings large crowds, especially on weekends. Some of the most popular locations (especially if you’re thinking a Black Balsam Knob Elopement) are literally bumper to bumper, no parking and constant streams of hikers mid-day. If privacy matters to you, weekdays are your best bet & in the fall are a must. Tip: Many people assume October for colors but they start very early at high elevations which makes mid-late September a great option too. Also, don’t sleep on early November either; it can offer beautiful colors at lower elevations with fewer people around.

Winter (December–March)
Winter can be one of the most underrated seasons for an Asheville elopement. The crowds are lighter, the air feels quiet, and the landscape can feel peaceful and stripped back. This season works best for couples who are flexible, adventurous, and okay with a quieter, moodier landscape.
But winter also requires flexibility. Higher elevation roads can close because of ice, snow, or weather, and some mountain locations become less predictable. That’s why for all winter elopements we put an even higher emphasis on backup plans.

For most couples, the best time to elope in Asheville is a weekday in spring, early summer, or fall, with the timing built around sunrise or sunset depending on the location.
